Analysis of Recent National Trends in Medicaid and CHIP Enrollment

This data note looks at national and state-by-state Medicaid and CHIP enrollment data through November 2021, when the nation was recovering from a surge in COVID-19 cases caused by the delta variant despite a vaccine being widely available to people ages 5 and older. After declines in enrollment from 2017 through 2019, preliminary data for November 2021 show that total Medicaid/CHIP enrollment grew to 85.8 million, an increase of 14.6 million from enrollment in February 2020 (20.5%), right before the pandemic and when enrollment began to steadily increase (Figure 1).
