Medicare’s End-Stage Renal Disease Program provides regular dialysis treatments to more than 550,000 people annually. As part of a new federal initiative, clinics that participate in the program will receive COVID-19 vaccines to administer to their patients and staff. Dialysis care providers have long administered influenza and hepatitis B vaccinations to people who receive dialysis treatment. The objective of the new effort is to enable people who receive dialysis treatments to get vaccinated against COVID-19 at a location they already go to from a trusted, trained, and familiar source. So far, only 35% of health care workers in dialysis centers have been vaccinated. CDC is partnering with dialysis provider organizations across nation, including the two largest operators: DaVita Inc. and Fresenius Medical Care North America.
