New research indicates that medical crowdfunding efforts in the United States are more likely to be for routine medical care compared with other countries. The study, published in JAMA Network Open, found that among GoFundMe campaigns in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada between 2018 and 2019, fundraising for routine care was three times more likely in the United States than in the other two countries. U.S.-based campaigns generally raised more money than the campaigns in the other countries; however, those focused on routine care saw less success overall. For cancer patients, crowdfunding for alternative treatments was more common than for campaigns for proven therapies.
