CDC’s Tips From Former Smokers initiative led more than 1 million Americans to stop smoking and an estimated 16.4 million adults to try to quit smoking from 2012 to 2018, according to new research. The findings about the Tips effort—the first federally funded anti-smoking ad campaign—are published in CDC’s Preventing Chronic Disease. “The Tips campaign effectively highlights the real-life consequences of smoking in a way that statistics cannot,” said CDC Director Robert R. Redfield, MD. “Personal stories from former smokers about the impact smoking has had on their lives have served an important role in helping others to quit.”
