DispatchHealth, Home Instead Form Partnership To Deliver In-Home Acute Care

DispatchHealth and Home Instead have teamed up to offer clients of the latter access to in-home acute care.

Originally launched as an in-home urgent care startup, Denver-based DispatchHealth delivers higher-acuity care – including offering hospital-level care – in the home.

Meanwhile, Home Instead is a Omaha, Nebraska-based personal care franchise company that has 1,200 locations in over a dozen countries. Last year, the home care technology company Honor acquired Home Instead.

Broadly, the partnership is an indirect response to data that shows about one-third of patients, age 70 and older, and more than half over the age of 85, come home from the hospital in a more impaired condition than when they entered.

The collaboration between the two organizations has its roots in a pilot program that was conducted during the fourth quarter of 2021. The success of this initial program led to its expansion in 30 markets.

Plus, over 55% of Home Instead clients using DispatchHealth have avoided unnecessary hospital visits.

Under this partnership, enabling aging in place is a key focus for both DispatchHealth and Home Instead.

“We believe this partnership is a major step in the right direction for the aging population,” Dr. Mark Prather, CEO and co-founder of DispatchHealth, told Home Health Care News in an email. “The simplicity and synergy of this partnership will be significant for those we’ll be serving. Home Instead CarePros already work with this demographic every day for non-medical needs, so DispatchHealth is an easy addition to their toolkit for Home Instead clients.”

Chad Brough, vice president of health care transformation at Home Instead, views the companies as providers of complementary services.

“DispatchHealth shares our deep commitment to delivering personalized care in the home,” he told HHCN in an email. “In the case of DispatchHealth, the emergency care that they provide in the home complements the personal care that our CarePros deliver to older adults. In the era of COVID-19, avoiding unnecessary hospitalizations is particularly important to our clients and their family caregivers. This partnership makes care more accessible to the aging adults we serve.”

On its end, DispatchHealth was also encouraged by the two organization’s aligning missions.

“Interestingly, both of our organizations were founded because we saw a need through the eyes of a family member,” Prather said. “Our mission, vision and values all lineup — we’re in this together for all the right reasons. Additionally, innovation is a guiding principle for both organizations, which is critical when trying to reach and care for the aging population.”

Overall, the partnership allows Home Instead and DispatchHealth to scale high-acuity medical care across numerous U.S. markets, increasing access to care and addressing barriers in the process.
