Introduction

Mr. Nelson Chidakwa, 35 years old, was suffering from Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and was willing to undergo a kidney transplant surgery. His brother came to his aid and agreed to be his kidney donor. He traveled from Zimbabwe to India on 15th December 2020 for the procedure. He got admitted to the Max Super Specialty Hospital, Ghaziabad, India for getting a Kidney Transplant performed.

Max Super Speciality Hospital, Vaishali is a 370+ bed healthcare institution with a complete setup be it diagnostic and therapeutic equipment and facilities or the 28+ specialties across the spectrum with ancillary services as well. The hospital has been accredited by National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH) and National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL). The hospital specializes in complex surgeries with liver & kidney transplants being one of them.

It was Dr. Manoj Singhal and Dr. Anant Kumar who performed the kidney transplant on the patient. Dr. Manoj K Singhal is one of the topmost Nephrologist and Transplant Surgeons in India with over two decades of experience. He has held respectable positions in various reputed hospitals. Dr. Anant Kumar is a Urinary Specialist – Urologist, Uro surgeon with over three and a half decades of experience.

Pre-Treatment & Process

Mr. Nelson Chidakwa stayed in the hospital for a period of 7 days for the pre-treatment and the procedure. The preparation for the treatment began with a number of mandatory tests and some that are recommended prior to any kidney transplant procedure. These reconfirmed Mr. Chidakwa’s candidature for the surgery and some of these evaluated his Medical and surgical history and involved Physical exam, Psychosocial exam, and Compatibility tests: Blood typing, Tissue typing, Crossmatching. Some more elective tests which were performed are Blood tests, Chest X-ray, Echocardiogram, Electrocardiogram, Cardiac stress test, Cancer screening, and Colonoscopy, etc. His brother also was checked for his health parameters. All this ensured that the kidney transplant procedure happened with efficiency and the new donor kidney was accepted well in the body of Mr. Nelson Chidakwa.

General anesthesia was given to the patient before the procedure began. Kidney transplant surgery went on for a period of two to three hours. The patient was advised to not eat or drink anything, not even water after midnight prior to the renal transplant procedure.

Post Treatment

The kidney transplant post-treatment recovery period post the procedure was 4-5 days as a hospital stay. The patient spent his time in the hospital in a specialized transplant care area.

The patient stayed in India for 30 days, which included the post-treatment recovery period and the treatment time period. This was advised by the consulting and treating doctors to Mr. Chidakwa. MediGence helped organize the entire travel, treatment, and stay for the patient and his brother.
