The work of maintenance technicians at manufacturing sites is often associated with awkward movements and postures in confined spaces.

This case study looks at a participatory intervention at an ophthalmic lens manufacturing site in Ireland to reduce MSD risks for maintenance technicians. An internal safety and health coordinator organised the intervention that involved both maintenance technicians and machine operators.

Together, they identified and assessed risks, focussing on a particular task that technicians had to perform in a kneeling position. Once a solution was found, both the technicians and operators were consulted to ensure that the proposed change would positively impact all those involved in the work environment.
