Risk assessment, training and policy – essential for healthy telework

While home-based telework has potential advantages, it can also negatively affect workers’ health and contribute to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), if not properly managed.

Together, employers and workers must perform a risk assessment of the home workplace to help mitigate factors that exacerbate MSDs and optimise workplace ergonomics. Employers must establish a telework policy that includes provisions on how to assess and manage occupational risk, ergonomic equipment, work hours and expected results. Additionally, education and training play an important role in the prevention and management of MSDs and help teleworkers stay active throughout the working day.
