White Paper: CSC Update on Stage 2: Current Direction and Timing of Meaningful Use Requirements

Author:

Erica Drazen

Summary:

On June 16, 2011, the HIT Policy Committee made formal recommendations to CMS on requirements for Stage 2 of meaningful use. Under the recommendations for Stage 2, all Stage 1 menu items would be mandatory, the threshold and/or scope of many Stage 1 measures would be increased, and providers would be responsible for meeting a number of new requirements (particularly around care coordination and patient engagement).
The final rule on Stage 2 is not anticipated from CMS until mid-2012, but there are more and more indications of what to expect. Even though the final rule will not be identical to the recommendations from the Policy Committee, it is unlikely to vary significantly – and hospitals and EPs should start preparing today.
