This data note looks at national and state-by-state Medicaid and CHIP enrollment data through July 2021, as the COVID-19 vaccine became widely available to people ages 12 and older and the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths were nearing a low point in 2021. Total Medicaid/CHIP enrollment grew to 83.6 million in July 2021, an increase of 12.4 million from enrollment in February 2020 (17.4%), right before the pandemic and when enrollment began to steadily increase (Figure 1).
