California has determined that a batch of the Moderna vaccine is safe after temporarily suspending immunizations from a shipment of more than 300,000 doses after fewer than 10 people required medical attention. California State Epidemiologist Erica Pan, MD, MPH, authorized health providers to “immediately resume” vaccine administration after the California Department of Public Health “found no scientific basis to continue the pause.” Specifically, the state had halted the administration of doses from the “41L20A” batch because of “possible allergic reactions.” Pan on Sunday recommended halting the distribution due to “a higher-than-usual number of possible allergic reactions” at a community vaccination clinic in San Diego. Moderna said it was examining the batch following reports of medical issues. Approximately 330,000 doses had been delivered to nearly 300 providers in California between January 5 and 12. Most of those providers stopped administering those doses as the state, Moderna, FDA, and CDC launched a probe.
