The nationwide coronavirus infection curve continued plateauing for a third week, with new cases numbering above 55,000 per day. Health experts say that at this level, a new wave could rapidly emerge. At least 31 states have pledged to make COVID-19 vaccines universally available to their adult populations by mid-April, and many more say they will broaden eligibility on or before May 1, the target date set by President Biden. The states of Alaska, Mississippi, Utah, and West Virginia have already made all adults eligible to receive doses, and some local jurisdictions have also started vaccinating all adults. CDC said that as of March 25, 130 million doses had been administered since vaccinations began on December 14, and that 14% of Americans are fully vaccinated. The United States is averaging about 2.5 million vaccine doses per day. If that pace continues, about one-half of the nation’s population will be at least partially vaccinated by mid-May. But vaccine hesitancy may slow the process, said NIH Director Francis Collins, MD.
